Getting Your Teen License

Age 15 to 17 Permit Qualifications:

  • Must have completed 6 hours of the 32-hour course

 

You must bring the following to DPS to obtain your permit:

  • Birth Certificate, Green Card, or Passport​

  • Social Security Card

  • Two Proofs of Texas Residency (utility bill, mortgage doc, etc)

  • Verification of Enrollment (VoE)

  • Driver Ed Learner Certificate (DE-964)

 

Age 16 to 17 Road Test Qualifications:

  • Must have held a permit for at least 6 months

  • Must have completed the 32-hours in-class course

  • Must have complete 14 hours of in-car training (7 hour driving and 7 hour observation)

  • Must have completed 30 hours of training with a parent or qualified adult

  • Must have completed IMPACT Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) course (within 90 days of Texas DPS road test)

 

You must bring the following to driving school (or DPS) for road test:

  • Your Learner's permit

  • Your Driver Education Certificate (DE-964)

  • Your IMPACT ITTD Certificate 

  • 30-Hour Behind-the-Wheel Instruction Log

  • If Parent Taught Driver Education (PTDE), then you must also bring:

    • Classroom Instruction Log

    • 14-Hour Observation and Behind-the-Wheel Instruction log

 

After completing the road test, you will be given a sealed envelope that you must take to DPS to get your driver's license.  You must not break the envelop seal.

Age 18 to 24 Permit Qualifications:

  • Must have completed 6 hours course

 

You must bring the following to DPS to obtain your permit:

  • Birth Certificate, Green Card, or Passport​

  • Driver Ed Certificate (DE-1317)

 

Age 18+ Road Test Qualifications:

  • Must have held a permit for at least 6 months (if between ages of 18-24)

  • Must have completed IMPACT Texas Adul Drivers (ITAD) course (within 90 days of Texas DPS road test)

You must bring the following to driving school (or DPS) for road test:

  • Your Learner's permit

  • Your Driver Education Certificate (DE-1317) if between 18-24

  • Your IMPACT ITAD Certificate

 

After completing the road test, you will be given a sealed envelope that you must take to DPS to get your driver's license.  You must not break the envelop seal.
