DRIVER'S LICENSE FAQS
In Texas, a teen can enroll in a driver education course at the age of 14. While a 14 year old can enroll in the course, teen must be at least 15 years of ago to be able to apply for a learner's permit. A learner's permit is a prerequisite for a teen to be able to start practicing behind-the-wheel in the presence of a driving instructor or a parent. After completing the first module (6 hours) of a driver education course, a teen who is at least 15 year of age can apply for a learner's permit by visiting the local DPS office. The teen must be accompanied by his or her parent or guardian and must bring the following document: Birth certificate, Passport, or Green card; Social Security Card; Teen course (DE-964) Certificate of Completion, school Verification of Enrollment(VOE) from high school, and two proof of identification and residency such as water bill or electricity bill.
For a teen, Texas requires a total of 44 hours of in-car training, including 7 hours of in-car observation, at 7 hours of in-car training with the driving school for instructor-led course, 30 hours of additional practice (10 of which must be at night). Some or all of the 30 practice hours can be with a certified parent or legal guardian or with a certified driving school.
Yes, every teen must pass the DPS road test before a license can be issued. The teen must have completed the full 32 hour online course, the IMPACT course, as well as 37 hours of behind-the-wheel driving and 7 hours of observation in order to be eligible to take the road test. And yes, My First Drive Driving School is authorized to conduct DPS road test onsite at the school.
At My First Drive, our Comprehensive driver's education program includes everything a teen needs to obtain a driver license. Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) is a free course offered by State of Texas. This is a 2 hour course that must be completed by a teen before they can be eligible to take the DPS road test.
The cost of the teen driver's ed varies depending on how many hours you would like to drive with the school. A teen is expected to drive a total of 37 hours and a teen must also conduct 7 hours of observation. The package offered by My First Drive Driving School vary from the minimum of 7 hour up to full 37 hours. Yes, if you are between the age of 18 to 24 years and a new driver seeking your first Texas driver's license, you must complete an approved six-hour adult driver education course under the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Yes, the adult driver course is typically taken online. It is a self-paced drivers ed course offered by My First Drive which you can complete from the convenience of your home. This course is required to be completed by adults 18 to 24 years of age. Adult 25 years of age or older are not required to take this course, though it is highly recommended for students to have a good theoretical foundation before they get behind-the-wheel. Another advantage of taking the course is that the test is built into the course which means that you don't have to take the test at DPS. You can instead complete the test online from the convenience of your home.

The cost of the adult drivers ed course depends on the number of driving hours opted for with the school. Adults who have never driven before, the recommendation is to consider the advanced package which includes 10 hours of behind-the-wheel driving lesson. Adult who have had some previous driving experience may consider 6 or 8 hours of driving lesson package depending on their unique needs. Teens can begin a state-approved driver’s ed course at age 14, but they must be at least 15 to apply for a learner’s permit.
Student between the ages of 14 to 17 are considered teens. They have the following requirements: 1) Complete 32-hour classroom (or online) course 2) practice at least 37 hours of behind-the-wheel driving lessons 3) 7 hours of observation 4) Take DPS road test.
Students ages 18+ are considered adults. Adults 18-24 are required to 1) complete 6-hour Adult driver’s ed course 2) practice behind-the-wheel until they are comfortable and lastly 3) take DPS road test.
For teens under 18, driver’s ed is mandatory. Adults ages 18–24 must take the 6-hour adult course before testing. Driver’s ed in not mandatory for adult over 25.
Texas allows both. Though online is the most common option as it allows students to move at their own pace from the convenience of their own home. Behind-the-wheel training must always be done in-person.
Teens can get their learner’s permit at 15 years old, after completing the first 6 hours of driver’s ed (also called the “DE-964 Certificate” phase).
